The Chainsaw is the weapon of choice of every incarnation of Leatherface, and the namesake of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise.
History[]
In the films, the chainsaw is used by Leatherface to kill/multilate his victims in horrifying and gruesome ways, while also cutting through minor obstacles.
It is suggested that the Sawyer family has gone through multiple chainsaws, and that it is traditional for a member of the family to recieve his/her own chainsaw, hence a quote of Drayton Sawyer; "The saw is family".
Appearance[]
The Poulan 245A Chainsaw, Leatherface's original chainsaw from the The Texas Chain saw Massacre, was small with a yellow handle and its small saw blade is bloodstained. The second chainsaw from the The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is noticeably larger, is orange in color and it has a larger and longer saw blade.

In Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3, the chainsaw that is constructed by Tinker Sawyer for Leatherface is custom-made, with a stylized handle, a sword-like guard, and the words "The saw is family" engraved on it's blade. Like the chainsaw from the second film, this chainsaw is also large in size.
Chainsaws in later films are usually depicted as darker in color and much more rugged.
Chainsaw Heaven[]
In the second film, past chainsaws are kept in an old funhouse, along with Grandma Sawyer's body. Drayton earlier refers to this as "Chainsaw Heaven" but it is not discovered until later that it is a physical place rather than a religious one.
Chainsaw Dance[]

At the end of the first film, Leatherface slashes his chainsaw around in a fit of anger, dubbed by fans "The Chainsaw Dance." In real life, Hooper wanted Hanson to have Leatherface do "something insane" with the chainsaw, and thus the dance was made and used for the ending of the film. [1]
Trivia[]
- In Mortal Kombat X, Reptile is confused by the chainsaw, mistaking it for "a sword with a moving blade."
- As someone who uses a saw is called a "Sawyer" it is likely the Sawyers have been using saws for a long time. The name comes from "one who saws wood" which means the family may have origins as woodsmen.
- The Golden Chainsaw in Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 won the Golden Chainsaw Award in Dead Meat's "Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3" kill count.
